Michael is awarded for his research on the diversity and function of microorganisms. The Erwin Schrödinger Prize is the highest award of the Austrian Academy of Sciences for lifetime achievement in the fields of mathematics and natural sciences. It is presented annually since 1958. The award ceremony took place at the academy on December 11 2016.
