Buck Hanson, Alexander Loy, and David Berry were part of an international team led by Bärbel Stecher from Munich, Germany that succeeded in identifying the protective effects of the mouse gut commensal Mucispirillum schaedleri against infections with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The protective effect of Mucispirillum is based on outcompetition of Salmonella for certain nutrients, such as nitrate, and suppression of the production of Salmonella's most important virulence factor - the type 3 secretion system.
