Holger Daims, Michael Wagner, Kristina Djinovic-Carugo, and Andreas Richter received funding from the University of Vienna for a new research platform on comammox organisms. Aims of the platform are to study fundamental aspects of comammox physiology and to elucidate the ecological roles and impact of the complete nitrifiers. Subprojects include the structural and biochemical characterization of key enzymes of comammox and the analysis of greenhouse gas production by comammox bacteria. The Faculty of Chemistry, Research Network Chemistry meets Microbiology, Centre for Molecular Biology, and Faculty of Life Sciences participate in the platform.

Research platforms are organisational units, established between faculties at the University of Vienna in order to promote especially innovative research areas. They address academic questions that can only be studied from an interdisciplinary perspective.
