| International FISH Course |
The Department of Microbial Ecology offers an annual international FISH workshop.
The one-week course includes a theoretical and a laboratory section.
Main topics are:
Principles of fluorescence in situ hybridization.
Application of FISH in microbial ecology
Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM)
Computer-assisted digital image analysis
Probe design and evaluation

International FISH Course 2008
The International FISH Course 2008 will take place on February 25-29, 2008 at the Department of Microbial Ecology, University of Vienna. The course program covers a series of in depth seminars and an extensive
lab workshop (development and evaluation of rRNA-targeted probes, FISH
analysis and its application in microbial ecology, CARD-FISH, Clone-FISH, FISH-MAR, confocal microscopy,
and image analysis). Participants are encouraged to bring and work on their own sample material.
The course fee is € 770,- (includes the official course dinner on Tuesday and coffee/tea during the course
but no other meals and accommodation).
If you are interested in participating, please download and complete the application form, in which you are asked to include a short abstract describing your major research interest and your intended application of FISH. Please send the completed application form by email to
The application deadline is November, 17. Notification of acceptance is November, 24.
Due to limited lab space the number of participants is restricted to 12. We ask you for understanding that participants will be selected based on the applications received.
Upon acceptance we will contact you with more detailed information on
the course (protocols for sample fixation and transport, directions to the Department of Microbial Ecology, etc.).
We kindly ask for your understanding that we can not offer funding/fellowships for the course.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further information.
